Sorbet Lamp

The Sorbet Lamp is a passion project I designed during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

I was inspired by the Bauhaus style and wanted to incorporate simple shapes and fun colours. The colour palette is reminiscent of sorbet hence the name!

By using painted plywood, I am able to maximise the material use by transforming the raw plywood material into something more exciting.

This project underwent quite a few iterations before the final design.

Design Iteration

During the creation of the Sorbet Lamp it went through a range of changes and iterations before completion. The images below reflect a 'timeline' of design progression. The initial design intent was to create a lamp that incorporated the natural colour and grain of the wood material however, I found that this design was not in line with my personal design style and it did not aesthetically with the blue acrylic light shade.

This then lead me to incorporating colour on each side of the lamp face so that it contrast well with the acrylic shade. When I began working on this, I then realised that the colours were too bold so I lightened them to create a softer more child-like design which I enjoyed.

I then began thinking of the real-life construction of this design and decided to change how it would be assembled and manufactured entirely by making each coloured face an individual piece. This design was my second last iteration as I liked the colour scheme and overall design however, I felt as though the blue light shade needed to be changed to a purple to bring out more brightness and harmony within the colour scheme.
